- Remove your old things before moving. Donate them if possible. It will help others using them and you will receive a tax write-off.
- It is important to see what is covered in homeowner’s insurance policy if anything is broken.
- Find and hire good house movers to help you. Always interview potential movers in person and get a detailed quote.
- Change your postal address in the U.S. Post Office at least four weeks in advance.
- Before moving day, measure all large furniture and appliances as well as doorways, hallways, stairwells and elevators to make sure everything will all fit.
- Let movers pack the breakables because they only insure what they pack.
- Pack an overnight bag with two to three days worth of clothes and toiletries.
- Make sure to load the large furniture into the truck first and the boxes last. That enables you to unload the boxes first, unpack them immediately so the furniture just drops right in place.
