According to the Hiscox research, cybercrimes and e-risks are the major challenges for US SMBs. Most of the small and medium businesses in US (about 75%) are not fully confident regarding the safety of their office premises. About 22% of the respondents consider that they are prone to cybercrime and e-risks. 33% of the respondents said that their businesses are getting highly susceptible to the thieves is due to the economic downturn.
As per the survey, SMEs said that among the many items present in their offices, computer equipment is more likely to be stolen by thieves. Apart from that the other concerns shared by SMEs are hackers accessing SMEs confidential data, being impersonated online and losing important data. Only 17% of respondents have said that they have no reason to be afraid of theft. Hiscox suggested SMEs to take protective measures against theft of both physical and confidential data. Among the many measures suggested by Hiscox, some are given below.
SMEs should check that windows and doors are properly secured. SMEs should store valuable things in an out-of-sight place and activate alarm. Protect confidential and important data by regulating the access to information by employees. Protect your main server by using critical passwords. It is better to take third party’s help when SME owners are unable to handle servers and lack technical skills. Back up is important method to protect data.
